HOME– Today I made three batches of lemon bars, one batch of lemon puff pastry rolls, and one hundred lemon thumbprint cookies.

In all of these attempts, only forty-eight of the thumbprint cookies turned out unblemished, unburned, perfectly shaped, pretty, tasty, lemony and durable enough for transport to the party I’m making them for. I need one hundred fifty cookies, so I still have a good one hundred cookies to bake. Unless, of course, we calculate by my glacial and bungling cookie-making pace today, which would mean I have approximately four hundred fifty to go to yield another hundred.

And yet, I am over lemon cookies. Very over lemon flavor, lemon juice, lemon extract, lemon zest, lemon curd, you name it, Lemon, and I am over it. I don’t want one hundred more lemon cookies in my future. My thumb is cramped.

Around ten o’clock tonight, I discovered these pretty little cookie cutters. Aren’t they cute? These would make such precious party cookies.

Oh how I want to make some sugar cookies with brown sugary icing for the acorns, yellow shiny maple leaves and orange and red oak leaves. I suppose it’s best that I’m working in the morning or I’d actually get up and start my search for the perfect party cookie all over again– the perfect non-lemon party cookie.

Sometimes, a cookie is just a cookie. And other times, it’s the vast and infinite universe itself, all rolled into one sweet bite. And I want that one bite to be perfect. Is that so wrong?
