Give*a*Way, Share*a*Way, Craft*a*Way: Win a Handmade Nation DVD!
Issue no. 12 | Post no. 5: You don’t have to be a card-carrying, scrapbook-clubbing, crafter to wield a glue gun or a brandish a pair of knitting needles. We all have lurking, repressed talents- beyond our collective cooking prowess. Did you know that these underused gifts – by universal law- must occasionally be unloosed into the exosphere? ‘Strue. So is your crafty alter ego in need of a little push?
How about 65 minutes of adrenaline-pumping inspiration that will electrify your crafty little fingers? Oh yeah. This is the summer of L-O-V-E. It’s the Paper Apron’s first-ever Give-a-Way, Share-a-Way, Craft-a-Way! I’m sending a copy of Handmade Nation: the Rise of DIY Art, Craft, and Design to one lucky winner, hidden somewhere inside one of our 50 united states.
Wait. There’s a hitch. Read the small print:
To enter, leave a comment sharing the name of one lucky person that you will pass the DVD along to, after you watch it, should you win. First names, nicknames, names made up to protect the innocent, whatever- this is the honor system. It would be super duper if that lucky person passed it along, as well, and so on, and so on and so on and so on. Until one day, it shows back up on my doorstep, tattered, and scratched and years beyond my memory of the yard sale where I’d sold my obsolete DVD player for pennies. But I should probably keep my one-with-the-universe aspirations in check.

In about two weeks, (let’s say Wednesday, August 4th, 11 PM EST, if I can stay up that late) I’ll write everyone’s name down on a scrap of paper (I’m a purist) and I’ll ask a random passerby to pick one name out of a hat. I’ll write you to get your mailing info and you, my lucky winner, will be off to the movies.
In the meantime, I’ve started my own summer crafting adventure. Any guesses as to what it’s going to be?

I would hope your “random passerby” at 11 p.m. would be Rich! Mwah ha ha ha…
If I win, I will pass the DVD along to my friend, Amy. Then I will pass it along to my Mom, Peg, who will no doubt give it to her friend Rita.
This is too fun Kim! Hope I win!

Sweet, you’re making something out of paper mache. I should get my act together and send you a picture of my paper mache Halloween costume; Mother Nature. Think big birds nest on head. My latest “crafty” experiment; I’m making hula hoops. I think the movement needs to begin again – Zoomba-Smumba, let’s Hula-Hoopla. If I win I will first watch it for inspiration,to actually finish my projects, and then I will pass it on to my friend Maryanne of Magical Scraps, who read the book but has not yet seen the flick.

If I win, I will pass the DVD along to my friend Whitney who would no doubt pass it along to others who would also appreciate it.

Well, since I’m your mom, if my name were drawn, I’d probably come over to your house to watch it with you and Mazy, then I’d play “random passerby” and draw another name so you could send it along to that lucky person. How’s that for a plan? In the meantime, I can’t wait to see that “crafting adventure” you’re working on!

I don’t have a crafty bone in my body (makes it a real struggle when you have two young kids, lemme tell ya), BUT my dear friend Rachel is the master knitter/sewer. She would love this.

wow! i had never even heard about this! let’s see, who would i pass it on to? probably my dear blog friend michelle, she’s the craftiest person i know, or maybe draw a name off my blog to pass it on to. that would be fun!

oh and i cannot wait to see what it actually is that you are making? very intriguing? looks like giant hamster party house to me!

@Kelly, on our old street, my passersby were a parade of lost men that traveled with paper bag in hand. Here, all is better. Although it does remind me of late one Halloween night, when a well-respected older gentleman – a local composer and his wife walked by wearing pajamas! They laughed and said they weren’t in costume, but thought what the heck. Every now and then you need to take a stroll in your p.j.’s. I wholeheartedly agree. Although I haven’t done it — yet!
You are so crafty in so many aspects of your life- photography, knitting, cooking, baking, and so much more that I’m sure I don’t know about. This movie is cool because it takes creativity and spirit- like yours- and inspires you to punch it up and slam it down. I think I had a volleyball moment there. Ah, those were good ole days from the sidelines.
@Nina, Yes! Paper Mache it is! But, just what? Give me a few more weeks and I’ll show and tell.
And a big birds nest on your head? That is hysterical! And you’re making hula-hoops? I am so intrigued. My hips could sure use a hula-hoop.
@Carolyn, Speaking of Whitney, I can’t wait until she gets home from vacation and starts blogging again. Check it out: The Avarice for gorgeous interior design and decorating inspiration.
@Mom, I like your plan. But don’t try and bribe my random passerby. He’s not selling out!
@Amy, you have such a terrific funny bone, I cannot believe you do not have a crafty bone. In fact, photography can be very crafty! And look at your food styling! (I am looking for your photos on tastespotting- so I can link to them.) Besides, this movie could cure your bones.
@underthebigbluesky, I love your idea! Of course, reading your blog, I should not be surprised. You were probably that sweet little girl in the front row that always shared with everyone. And giant hamster party house? Too funny and a very good guess, but nope. Maybe next time (if there’s ever another paper mache project in my lifetime) I’ll consider a big cat house for my shortest, furriest pet.

@Kim, I think your project is a giant Chinese lantern?
July 22nd, 2010 at 7:19 am
@Kim – Forgot to ask you, have you taken up knitting yet? If not, I would be most happy to get you started. Personally I am looking for someone to teach me to crochet (again! My grandmother taught me when I was little, but I don’t remember any more.) I have looked at a couple of videos on YouTube, which were quite helpful, but for me there is no substitute for hands-on. I have several LOVELY lace projects that I am dying to try…

What a fun giveaway. I would pass it on to lil Sis in law Sabrina, who’ll probably pass it to her mom, then it’ll go to a neighbor.
July 24th, 2010 at 5:30 pm
If I won, I’d pass it on to my sister, who is a super-crafty stay-at-home mom.
July 26th, 2010 at 4:42 am
@Kelly, nope, not a lantern, but that’s a pretty good idea! I’ll finish up the shell of it this week and go on to the next phase, next week. I will say this, it’s taking MUCH longer than I anticipated. And no, I still haven’t been knitting, though I did buy a neat little novelette about a knitter over the weekend. I’m always hoping the knitting bug will bite me again, but the other bugs in my life must be bigger.
@Angie, somehow, as busy as you are, I can see you starting a new crafty hobby.
@Nicole, your sister’s life as a super-crafty stay-at-home mom sounds like my idea of the perfect life. As much as I love designing, I always want play hooky and skip work for day;I am dying to stay at home and play.

@Kim, was the book the Yarn Harlot? Very funny stuff there…
As for knitting, like all my crafty hobbies, I pick it up & put it down frequently. I’ll go for a few months where I can’t knit enough, then put it down for several months. Yet it will call to me & I’ll start again… It is just so relaxing & nukes stress like crazy! Yarn & needles & a pattern now & then end up being SOOOOO much less expensive than a therapist! HA!
July 27th, 2010 at 6:17 am
@Kelly- YUP! That was quite a guess! What a great name.
